Fondly remembered by those active in the league at the time for its hospitality and high quality food (sit down not buffet – a rarity!). THE DUCHY ARMS - Sancroft Street, Lambeth
Originally captained by Malcolm Jones, then by Gary Cummins, and then by Kenny Bright, who should be recognised as one of the all-time great skippers. The dominant team in the early days of the league - for many lesser teams walking into this Millwall supporters’ pub was literally like walking into the lion’s den! Roll call of players during its heyday included Bright, Cummins, Jones, Bernie Wilcock (later Durham Arms and Bell), Wayne Herne, Ted Orme, Terry Buttery, Dale Chappell (later Giraffe and Lambeth Sportsman), and Gary McKetrick.
League champions 1995-96, 1996-97, 1998-99, 1999-2000; Cup winners 1998-99, 2000-01 and runners-up 1996-97. Team also won the one-and-only ‘champs versus the rest’ challenge in 2000. THE DURHAM ARMS - Harleyford Road, Lambeth
Originally captained by Paul Blackburn and one of the giants of the league’s history, its rivalry with the mighty Duchy Arms was legendary. League and Cup winners in 1997-98 but followed this with a remarkable fall from grace the following season. Ex-Steam Engine player Ruairi Flynn took over the captaincy in 1999-2000 and the team reached the Cup final but lost surprisingly to the Black Prince. The following season current league secretary Jerry Tickell took over the captaincy and former Cricketers skipper Gerry McGuinness joined it and they took the team to second in the League and to another Cup final, losing to the Duchy although they regained the Cup in 2001-02 over Lambeth Sportsman. Ex-Duchy player Bernie Wilcock won the 2000-01 singles title as a Durham player, defending his title. Other players included Tim Seacombe, Ian Devlin, Jamie Clarke, Peter Keegan, Jimmy Murphy, and Dean Bell; Tickell, McGuinness, Wilcock, and Murphy reunited at the Bell after the Durham folded.

JFK’S - 188 Rye Lane, Peckham
Very much the modern-day giant of the league. First joined in 2004-5 playing out of Rosie O’Grady’s, Manor Place, Walworth, captained by Neil Hall with team including Tony Bailey, Tom Burton, Stephen Condon and Richard Brown, all but Burton having played together at Lambeth Sportsman. Hall left for the Bell but Burton took over captaincy in 2005-06 and relocated team to JFK’s, with team comprised of Bailey (later JFK’s All-Stars), Condon, Brown (later JFK’s All-Stars), plus Darren Baker (later Jacks), Joe Flaherty Jr, Peter Panayiotou (later Bell and JFK’s All-Stars), Ian Chapman and Michael Ivory. Finished runner-up on its debut as JFK’s by one point, but won the Cup over Duke of Cambridge. New team formed the following year under Joe Prince and captaincy has since shifted to Jack Pople and occasionally Robbie Robb. Captured first League title in 2006-07, repeated in 2008-09, and won subsequent Cups in 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2009-10. Never out of the top two in either League or Cup since moving to JFK’s. Regular players in the team have included Pople, Prince, Robb, Jamie Fay, John Kelly, Rob McKay, Etienne Wagner, Rodney Bourke, Ian Clark, Rob Chalmers, Chris Snyman, and Nigel Clark. Pople and Robb won pairs titles back-to-back 2008-09, 2009-10. The pub and strip bar run by the late Denise D’Courtney may be the most unlikely venue for any team in the league but it joined in 2004-05 and enjoyed quick success, winning the League on its debut. The departure of players like Manuel Fontes and Bruno Silva hurt it and the following year it finished bottom of the eleven teams who completed the season. THE UNION JACK - Union Street, Southwark
One of the oldest teams in the league but one which has gone through more than a few venue and name changes over the years. Formed for the 1997-98 season as the Jubilee Tavern on York Road, Waterloo, then moved to the Florence Nightingale, Westminster Bridge Road, mid-way through the following season. Moved again to Horse and Groom, Westminster Bridge Road, 2000-01 but moved a further time mid-way to finish season at the Spanish Patriot, Lower Marsh. Moved again mid-season 2001-02 to take up brief residence at the Duke of Sussex, Bayliss Road before moving to the Crown, Blackfriars Road, Southwark, in 2002. In 2004-05 the team returned to its original home at the Jubilee, then in 2006 moved to share at the Bell, Webber Street, playing as Red Star Bell. Settled at Union Jack in 2008-09,
Captained throughout all these moves by Darren O’Byrne. Over the years the team has traditionally developed its own players and they have moved locations loyally with it - examples include John Ballantyne, George Burke, Will Campbell, Brendan Connors, Michael Formoy, Gary Garrib, Dave Haydon, Simon Notton, Ronnie Owen, Martin Scutt, Hamid Sidki, William Tweed, and Nas Zekria. In recent years team has recruited from elsewhere including Mikey Clayton (ex-Steam Engine, Lambeth Sportsman, Ca’t’espero, and Nolan’s), Alex Lawrence and Akar Necati (both ex-Beehive and Bell / Jacks), and other experienced recent additions include Nigel Smith and Danny Moffatt. Cup runners-up 2009-10. Connors reached singles final 2004-05 as Jubilee player. Team has dominated Summer League in recent years: Red Star ‘A’ won title in 2007 and successfully defended in 2008 as Union Jack ‘A’ over teammates Union Jack ‘B’. In 2009 Union Jack ‘B’ reversed this result, pushing the ‘A’ team into second place. Haydon won 2007 Summer singles for Red Star ‘A’ over ‘B’ player Scutt, Clayton also runner-up in 2008 Summer singles playing for Union Jack ‘B’. Tweed runner-up 2007 Christmas singles event for Red Star Bell
